Marcus, in his high school sophomore year, in partnership with his older brother Jeffrey, led Loyola Academy to the conference championships and the best season in the school’s history.

After taking a transfer to Whitney M. Young Magnet High School for his junior and senior seasons, he led the school to the Illinois 4A Championship in 2009. He was named the state tournament’s ‘MVP’ (Most Valuable Player).

In his freshman year (2009-10) with the University of Central Florida, the university was in the final year of a 5-year contract with Adidas AG, a German multinational corporation that designs and manufactures shoes, clothing, and accessories. However, Marcus insisted on wearing Air Jordan shoes out of respect for his legendary father, Michael Jordan. This conflict forced Adidas AG to terminate its sponsorship deal with the University of Central Florida.

Air Jordan is a line of basketball shoes and athletic apparel produced by Nike, Inc. (an American multinational footwear, apparel, and sports equipment brand), the major global rival of Adidas AG. The first Air Jordan shoe was produced in late 1984 for Michael (during his time with the Chicago Bulls) and released to the public in April 1985.

Marcus scored 8 points per game in his true freshman year (2009-10) and was included in the ‘C-USA All-Freshman Team’ in 2010. C-USA (Conference USA), headquartered in Dallas, Texas, is an intercollegiate athletic conference whose member institutions are located within the Southern United States. The conference participates in the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division I in all sports.
